Case study 6: Managing ill-health retirement

The shift manager was looking for guidance on the correct process to follow in light of the employee successfully winning an appeal against ill health retirement. The employee was working 5 hours a day and was unable/unwilling to finish work later than 5.50pm.

How Minty & Friend helped

  • Minty & Friend met with the employee and discussed his situation.
  • Minty & Friend was the first to identify some of his resistance to finishing work later was due to family reasons and a concern regarding travelling later. It wasn't just a health issue.
  • Minty & Friend advised the manager on what duties the employee could do.
  • Minty & Friend worked with the manager and employee to progress his rehabilitation. This was in line with EHS recommendations that had not at that point been fully implemented.
  • Allowing for the employees reasons for not finishing later, Minty & Friend looked at and recommended shift patterns were altered. This gradually increased his hours more appropriately.
  • Employee now works from 11am-7pm, the full 8 hours.
  • The Manager is happy with the work and the employee is successfully maintaining his hours.
