Case study 3: Managing long-term impairments and access to work
The manager was looking for the employee to take more responsibility in managing his impairment as it was affecting attendance.
- The employee had a number of absences from work due to his leg problems. This had led to him being warned under the attendance procedure.
- Needing to attend hospital appointments related to his impairment, his absence increased.
- Beyond the work remit but having an affect, the employee reported that his local council flat was not adequate for his personal requirements relating to hygiene maintenance of his leg, which increased his absence.
- The employee also had problems with anger control.
How Minty & Friend helped
- Minty & Friend recommended an Access to Work assessment. The employee is now receiving £5,320 a year from the scheme to help with travel costs when he cannot use public transport.
- This has increased his attendance levels as previously when he found it difficult to use public transport, he was unable/unwilling to come into work.
- Minty & Friend reviewed the job design and duties. We identified tasks he could do within his current job and how he could rotate between standing and seated duties.
- Minty & Friend researched where the employee could attend an Anger Management course and presented the options to the shift manager and employee.
- The employee has now attended 5 sessions and reports that it is helping. For example, the shift manager reports that in one instance when a manager made a mistake regarding health and safety, the employee reacted very calmly whereas before he would have been very aggressive.
- Minty & Friend contacted the employee's local social services to explore options for the employee in his local home. Minty & Friend assisted with drafting a letter for the employee to take to his housing officer.
